The Explore Crosslake Committee of the Brainerd Lakes Chamber is launching a weekly event featuring fun, family-friendly activities to make Tuesdays in the summer BIG FUN Tuesdays in Crosslake. Activities are slated to begin Tuesday, June 29 and run through August 17.
Thanks to the support from the Whitefish Area Lodging Association, all of the activities will be FREE to visitors and residents and build on the folklore of Paul Bunyan in the Lakes Area. The headline event will be minnow races at 2 p.m. The fish will race, three in a row, down a long tube-like track that are reported to be Paul Bunyan’s drinking straws. Other activities include a pancake toss with giant-sized pancakes (hula-hoop-sized), old-fashioned gunny sack races, a fish toss (with the big stuffed fish that didn’t get away from Paul!) and even campfire stories for the younger crowd. Water Wars will also be set up for the crowds to enjoy and participate in for a nominal fee.
The concept is modeled after the successful attendance draw of Nisswa’s Turtle races on Wednesdays, Market in the Park in Pequot Lakes on Thursdays, and Duck Races in Pine River on Fridays. “The Crosslake community has been searching for a way to attract visitors during the summer,” said Ruth Ann Hanson, Area Director of the Chamber.
“The Paul Bunyan theme was such a natural for Crosslake,” said committee member Kathy Moore, a representative with the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway Association. “Since the town is located along the Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway and offers some of the best fishing lakes in the state in the adjoining waters of the Whitefish Chain, minnow races and Paul Bunyan related activities will be a great hit with the kids and adults alike.”
Debby Floerchinger, Explore Crosslake Committee Co-Chair and Crosslake Advisory Committee member thinks the success of the new activities will be driven by the excitement from the local businesses. “Everyone is very excited to make Tuesdays a great day to be in Crosslake. Many businesses are planning specials for Tuesday or will be offering their own big fun activity. It will be fun to see the town roll out a red and black plaid carpet for guests.”
