Our goal is to provide our guests, new and loyal, with a great dining experience every time they visit. We want to create an atmosphere that is comfortable to everyone, whether from the cabin or right off the farm. Prairie Bay has been in Baxter for seven years now, and we work hard every day to set ourselves apart from the “chain” restaurants that you find just about everywhere.

The most important thing to know about us: we love food! Whether it is cooking, serving, eating, or just talking about it, food is our profession and our passion. We make nearly everything fresh, to order, for you and source as much local product as we can. Chef Matt has created great relationships with more than 20 farmers in the area and as the seasons progress, we have a constant supply of fresh goods coming in the back door. There is nothing better than a tomato picked off the vine that day, right down the road, and put on your plate that night.

Our menu changes frequently as fruits and vegetables come into their seasons, and also when inspiration hits. Because we are not a chain, we make the type of food we would like to eat. We have thick stacked sandwiches and hand-tossed wood oven pizzas. Pasta dishes, seafood/pork/chicken entrees, fresh salads, and of course amazing steaks. There is lots for the kids as well, including pizzas, pastas, and the chef’s favorite grilled cheese. Our signature item and a must have is the Build your own Bruschetta. With more than 12 ingredients and garlic-brushed toasts, this fan favorite is a treat for the eyes and the taste buds.

Not only do we have a full-service restaurant, but we also cater events of any size, all year long. From pig roasts to large wedding receptions our goal is to bring the quality of an in-house dining experience to your event. Catering menus are custom built for every occasion and we can make any budget stretch its furthest. We can host large parties here as well, for seminars, Christmas parties, or just getting together with a few friends. In addition to catering we offer private chef service for a one-night occasion or a whole summer season.

We are here to share our passion and our food with all adventures to the northland. But don't just take my word for it! Check out how much fun Brainerd Lakes Area mountain biking enthusiasts had creating this YouTube video! Don't be intimidated! This is an advanced trail. There are beginner and intermediate trails as well. What am I talking about? The newly opened Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Biking Trails in the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area near Crosby-Ironton. In June, Hans "No Way" Rey, an extreme mountain biking enthusiast known throughout the world, had this to say about the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Biking Trails: "The Cuyuna Lakes trails are among the best XC trail network I have ridden. Super flowy and fun. Mountain bike specific trails with flow is the future of our sport. It's good to see the Cuyuna trails spearheading this evolution of the sport. I loved the trails and riding and I'm sure it will do wonders to the local community and for mountain bike enthusiasts in a 200-mile radius and beyond. Everybody who helped this project can be proud of themselves." Indeed, there are a lot of people who can be proud of this trail, including the Minnesota DNR, International Mountain Biking Association and the Minnesota Off-Road Cycling Cuyuna Chapter of IMBA, as well as former Rep. James Oberstar, D-Minn., among many, many others. Check out the IMBA blogs with more information about the history of the trail. A special thank you to Hansi Johnson, IMBA Midwest regional director for the Hans Rey photograph and for his assistance in helping the Brainerd Lakes Chamber spread the word about this new community attraction. Look for more information, including a news release featuring how this trail came to fruition, later this month. We’re centrally located in the area close to great shopping, fabulous restaurants, and all the small specialty shops the area has to offer. Dad can enjoy some time at Mill’s Fleet Farm, which we affectionately call the men’s mall or Gander Mountain while Mom can get absorbed in the beautiful Christmas Point Wild Rice Co. just down the street from us. Prairie Bay Grill and Catering, located right next door is distinctive in providing our guests with the best dining experience in the Lakes Area by preparing the highest quality, freshest ingredients and offering exceptional service. Once you try them I’m sure you’ll agree they are one of the Midwest’s absolute finest restaurants.

But the biggest reason people visit us is for the exciting Rapid River Indoor Water Park that’s located right inside our hotel. You’ll enjoy quality family time that is all too hard to come by in these times. We have the 240-foot body slide and a 250-foot tube slide that comes out to a Lazy River that floats you effortlessly up and down water channels that even include a rapids area and a waterfall. Don’t think for a second that kids can be too young for the Water Park. One entire half of the park is dedicated to younger children. We feature a zero depth entry on the kids end and it’s only 18 inches at the deepest. It features smaller slides and attractions that younger children are absolutely fascinated with. They’ll have a ball spraying Mom and Dad with the water hoses!! The edges of the kid’s end are very close for parents that like to keep close watch. There’s no age that is too young to enjoy our water park.

You’ll get a peaceful night’s sleep in our Serta Perfect Sleepers and all the furniture is locally made by craftsman from the Brainerd area. You really don’t need to look any further for a great Up North family vacation, we’ve got it all. This video shares the details from March 5-17. See you in Crosslake!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8813656696854127551.post-26128838163248112452011-02-25T12:06:00.002-06:002011-02-25T16:26:24.793-06:00St. Patrick’s Celebration in Crosslake, Celebrating 37 years of tradition and memoriesFor 37 years, Crosslake has been home to one of Minnesota’s biggest and best St. Patrick’s celebrations. And this year is shaping up to be no exception.

Dodo Fraser, affectionately referred to as the “Queen of Crosslake” by acquaintances, said she has participated in Crosslake’s St. Patrick’s Celebration every year in one way or another since its inception in 1974. In fact, Dodo and husband Leo were the parade Grand Marshals in 2004. A resident of Crosslake for 63 years, Dodo recalls the early days of simple floats, the crowning of a St. Patrick’s queen and the exuberance it brought to a small town community.

“When it started out they had more people in the parade than those watching,” Dodo laughed. “It’s unreal, but it’s a lot of fun and a good get-together. You almost have to be there to believe it; and it’s growing every year. We’re just a small town, but we do draw a lot of people.”

What began through the initiative of a few Crosslake businesses has now grown into a week-long celebration that attracts attendees in the thousands. Ruth Ann Hanson, Area Director of the Crosslake office of the Brainerd Lakes Chamber, said she has been involved with the Crosslake celebration for the past 10 years and said it isn’t uncommon to see between 8,000 and 10,000 people line the parade route through the heart of Crosslake to watch the legendary event.

“This has become a tradition for many families,” Hanson noted. “It’s a joint effort between the Chamber and the City of Crosslake and it takes a lot of volunteers. It’s definitely one of our biggest volunteer-based events we do and is very well supported by the community.”

In the 37 years of its existence, Hanson said the parade has never been cancelled due to inclement weather. Over time, the route and direction of the parade has been revised to accommodate the growing number of participants and attendees. And in an effort to attract more people, the parade date was changed from St. Patrick’s Day to the Saturday that fell closest on the calendar.

This year’s parade will be held Saturday, March 12, beginning at 2 p.m. starting in the Crosslake Town Square and will wind its way to County Road 3 before heading north on Route 66. Long-standing Crosslake business community leaders Ted & Terry Pederson will be honored as this year’s Grand Marshals. But the parade is only one of the events planned for the week-long celebration.

Festivities kick off on Saturday, March 5 with the Miss Blarney Contest at Manhattan Beach Lodge. Be sure to get your Blinkie Button and have access to discounts and specials from a variety of Crosslake merchants. By purchasing a $5 raffle ticket, you’ll receive a chance to win a number of great raffle prizes and get a Blinkie Button free! Winners will be announced on St. Patrick's Day at the American Legion Raffle Party hosted by Lakeplace.com.

Begin your search for Crosslake’s own Pot-O Gold beginning Thursday, March 10. Clues for the treasure hunt will be posted at 9 a.m. daily at participating Crosslake area merchants and at all Brainerd Lakes Chamber offices.

Saturday, March 12 brings a day filled with fun for the whole family, starting with the Crosslake Firefighter’s Pancake Breakfast at 7:30 a.m. at the Crosslake Lutheran Church. After filling your belly, you’ll have enough time to scope out your vantage point for the parade, which begins at 2 p.m. But don’t forget to register for the 2011 Plunge for the Puck at Manhattan Beach Lodge. Between 12:30 and 2 p.m., you can sign up to jump into the chilly waters of Trout Lake to raise money for Pequot Lakes Area Youth Hockey. The event begins at 3 p.m.

Have a bite to eat and help a good cause in the process. Edina Realty will be cooking up and serving brats and pop from 11 a.m. -3 p.m. Saturday. The Edina Foundation will match all funds raised with proceeds earmarked for the Crosslake Foodshelf and Mid Minnesota Women’s Shelter.

Wrap up your day at Manhattan Beach Lodge with great music provided by Tim Mahoney starting at 5 pm. Music will also be provided throughout the day in the Town Square, at Maucieri’s and at Moonlight Bay Restaurant and Bar.

The celebration isn’t over quite yet! Find out if you hold a winning raffle ticket when you attend the Crosslake American Legion’s Raffle Party at 6 p.m. on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17.

“This is a very important celebration for Crosslake,” Hanson noted. “Many people who’ve lived here and moved away come back that weekend to see the parade and partake in the activities. It’s just part of Crosslake.”

Event sponsors for the 2011 St. Patrick’s Parade and Celebration include Lakeplace.com – Platinum Sponsor; Lakes State Bank of Crosslake, Lakewood Bank at Crosslake Reed's Market, RiverWood Bank of Crosslake, and Frandsen Bank and Trust of Crosslake – Gold Sponsors; Crosslake Insurance Agency, Inc., Stonemark Land Surveying, Inc., and RE/MAX Lakes Area Realty of Crosslake – Silver Sponsors; Crosslake Sheet Metal, Inc., and Crow Wing County Family Child Care Association – Bronze Sponsors; Haven Books, Crosslake Ace Hardware, Crosslake Veterinary Hospital, VP Insurance Center, and Crosslake Legal Services – Biffy Sponsors.

For a complete listing of events and a map of the parade route, click here.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8813656696854127551.post-51296874271407189392011-02-14T09:19:00.002-06:002011-02-14T09:22:16.740-06:00USA Today Travel names Brainerd in top 5 places to Road Trip in MinnesotaThey are encoruaging readers to...
Get out of the city and explore some of Minnesota's roadway scenery. The “Best Trails State” award is presented every two years by American Trails. Earlier this year, Minnesota was ranked the fourth most “bicycle friendly” state in the country by the League of American Cyclists.

The Brainerd Lakes Area owns a piece of these awards because of its many high quality trail systems. Hiking and bicycling options abound here, most notably with the Paul Bunyan State Trail, Paul Bunyan Scenic Byway and the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail, which will debut its mountain bike trail system this summer. Many of these multi-use trail systems offer recreational opportunities year-round. Additionally in the winter months, the Brainerd Lakes Area boasts one of the best snowmobiling trail systems in the Midwest, with more than 600 miles of groomed trails, as well as great trails for cross country skiing.

Most recently, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy named the Paul Bunyan State Trail their "Trail of the Month" because of it's year-round use, winding nature through beautiful forests, and the small-town charm of the 16 communities it connects.

Thank you to all – the organizations and many volunteers – who support our trail systems in the Brainerd Lakes Area and helped our state achieve this “Best Trails State” designation. Our trail system, as a major draw for visitors to the Brainerd Lakes Area, helps drive our economy.

A University of Minnesota economic impact study found that spending at Minnesota trails totaled more than $2.4 billion in 2008 and that some 30,900 full-time and part-time jobs were supported by trail spending. Walking and hiking are the most popular activities on Minnesota trails, followed by biking, running, inline skating, ATV riding, snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and horseback riding.

More information about our winter trail conditions and trail maps can be found on the Brainerd Lakes Chamber website.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8813656696854127551.post-86167821892633831322011-01-04T13:18:00.003-06:002011-01-04T13:38:08.895-06:00No place like Brainerd!"Where do you want to vacation in 2011 and why?"

The Los Angeles Times posed this question to readers for a Travel section contest. Maria Menz, California, responded to the question that she would go home -- to Brainerd! Her husband, Joe, is formerly of Brainerd.

Maria wrote, in part, "Maybe it's true that we can't ever go home again. All I know is, if I had the money to go anywhere in the world, I'd head right straight back to Brainerd, in a heartbeat. It's not fancy. It's not exotic and exciting, and God knows, it's not California. But, if you're willing to slow down, to unplug, and be still for a few moments, and savor that moment just for the pure, simple joy of it, then maybe, just maybe, home will find its way back to you."

We know the Brainerd Lakes Area is a great place to call home -- because it can be exciting and exotic as well as beautiful and peaceful! Visitors have represented more than 500 communities, 37 states, and nine countries. This year more than 80 light displays will be available for viewing in an expanded route through the Northland Arboretum, 14260 Conservation Drive Day in the heart of the Brainerd Lakes Area. Winter Wonderland hours are 5:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesdays through Saturdays beginning Thanksgiving Day and concluding on New Year’s Day. The Holiday Village, home to Santa Claus, will be open Friday and Saturday nights.

Many of the displays, which each contain hundreds of light bulbs, are animated. The holiday light display follows themed areas, as displays similar in nature, are grouped together. For instance, this year’s themes include up north woodland, custom children’s, toyland and Joy to the World sections. The sizes of the individual displays range from a small 9-foot by 7-foot deer to a 30-foot by 25-foot poinsettia to a 16-foot by 98-foot belly-flopping Frosty the Snowman.

In keeping with the international mission of this service organization to improve hearing health, a special aspect of Winter Wonderland has been the recent addition of two special nights with Signing Santa, where jolly old St. Nick communicates with children through American Sign Language. This year those nights will be Dec. 10-11.

Opportunities to enjoy Winter Wonderland other than in the comfort of your own vehicle also have been key components of this holiday experience. This year, walking tours are planned the nights of Dec. 5 and Dec. 19 while horse-drawn wagon rides will be available Dec. 12 and Dec. 26.

Tickets are $10 per vehicle, with $3 off coupons available throughout the community. All proceeds benefit Brainerd area charities. The final push was on to tie up all the loose ends and kick off this event by Thanksgiving weekend.

Mau, Augustinack, Rubin and countless others worked round the clock many days working to meet the opening day deadline. They ordered more than 40 light displays and organized the layout within the Arboretum. Others worked to bring children’s art, through a lighting contest, to life. Six children’s sketches were developed into light displays. It’s a tradition that continues today.

“We spent many hours out here,” Augustinack said of their home away from home – the Arboretum in the Fall 2007.

Augustinack remembers they weren’t alone.

“The power of volunteerism is just amazing,” Augustinack said. “And it takes that. We had some quality, quality resources. People stepped up. … It was an amazing fall.”

“We didn’t know what we didn’t know,” Mau said of that fluid first year with many decisions having to be made on the spot. “Literally, each day was bringing new opportunities – to spin it like Gus,” Mau said with a chuckle.

Just checking the bulbs alone – thousands of thousands of them – to see that all were in working order was a monumental task.

The countless hours of work resulted in an amazing holiday lighting display that went beyond the imaginations of those who had worked so many years to bring the idea to life.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8813656696854127551.post-67202070389947902782010-11-11T12:51:00.000-06:002010-11-11T12:51:05.054-06:00Winter Wonderland Count Down To Lights On

Meeting the challenges

Many other early obstacles created challenges for the Sertoma Club as the members tried to create this brilliant light display. How would they create the electrical infrastructure to support it? How would they raise funds to help finance the project? How would they gain enough volunteer support to build and sustain this effort?

Led by the countless hours of dedication by Mau, Augustinack and fellow Sertoman Lori Rubin, who helped sell the concept to community groups, the Sertoma Club met and exceeded every hurdle furled its way.

“Partnerships were such a key,” Augustinack said, noting the support of Brainerd Public Utilities and Jim’s Electric in building the electrical infrastructure, as just two examples of the tremendous community support for this daunting task.

Rubin agreed partnerships among community and business groups and faith in the Sertoma Club helped launch this undertaking, which took more than two years to coordinate.

“It was a huge undertaking,” Rubin said. The Sertoma Club wanted to create an opportunity for the two nonprofit organizations to partner in such a way that both organizations could benefit and give back to the community.

Nestled in the heart of Brainerd and Baxter, the Northland Arboretum, 14250 Conservation Drive, is an outdoor nature conservatory with more than 500 acres.

“It worked out really well, it’s secluded but yet we’re right in the heart of town – right between Brainerd, Baxter and Nisswa,” Augustinack said of the Northland Arboretum location.
The work was just beginning in the creation of Winter Wonderland but now a big hurdle – finding a location – had been cleared.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8813656696854127551.post-23450956785341579552010-11-11T12:45:00.000-06:002010-11-11T12:45:29.480-06:00Winter Wonderland First Night First Year

The wonder makes it worthwhile
Augustinack recalled the personal rewards that made all the time and effort meaningful.

“Think back to one of those first times when someone you watched (saw Winter Wonderland for the first time) … how magical it felt,” Augustinack said to Mau and Rubin.

Mau picked up on Augustinack’s comment, how magical it felt “when they actually saw the vision that we had been trying to paint for so many months – so many years. And they go through it and say, ‘Wow, this is really cool’”.

“That first year it was just, it was magical,” Mau said.
On opening night, vehicles were lined up for two miles as people awaited the opportunity to view Winter Wonderland.

Augustinack remembered revealing the light display to his 3-year-old nephew. “Just the oohs, ahhs and giggles …” Augustinack said, “That was special.”

Winter Wonderland is a holiday experience like no other in the region.

“It was like a warm, fuzzy feeling,” Mau said. “People coming out of here just glowing, saying they had been to other places but this place was the best.”

“It became something fun … really for the whole family, that was special,” Mau said.

“It was meant to be a family tradition that would start and so far we’ve heard a lot of families say that it’s become a tradition for them,” Augustinack said.

But it’s not just the enjoyment by visitors that makes Winter Wonderland magical, the Sertomans said. It’s also the opportunity to monetarily give back to the community and the ability to bring groups of volunteers together.

The Sertoma Club, given the startup costs associated with Winter Wonderland, didn’t expect to be able to start giving back to the community through donations within the first three years. However, the community interest and support was underestimated. To date, the Brainerd Area Sertoma Club has awarded $60,000 through grants and donations to Brainerd area charitable organizations.
And each year, hundreds of volunteers – other service club members, youth groups, individuals -- make Winter Wonderland happen.

“There are thousands of hours that go into making this possible,” Mau said.

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0
